POWER GENERATION
The Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act of 1978 (16 USC §2601) known as PURPA for short, was created to promote the conservation of energy, the efficient use of power production facilities and resources, and to insure equitable rates for consumers.
The long and short of it for you is that the power companies are required to buy back any surplus power that you generate for your home. Details vary from state to state, but the federal law that all states are required to follow has been compiled for your convenience here:
